چکیده

FC-normal logic programs are a generalization by Marek, Nerode, and Remmel of Reiter’s normal default theories. They have the property that, unlike most logic programs, they are guaranteed to have simple stable models. In this paper it is shown that the problem of skeptical reasoning in FC-normal programs is Π1-complete, the same complexity as for logic programs without the restriction of FC-normality. FC-normal programs are defined in such a way as to make testing a program for FC-normality very difficult in general. A large subclass of FC-normal programs, locally FC-normal programs, is defined, shown to be recursive, and shown to have skeptical consequence as expressive as the entire class of FC-normal programs.

On Finitely Recursive Programs

Disjunctive finitary programs are a class of logic programs admitting function symbols and hence infinite domains. They have very good computational properties, for example ground queries are decidable while in the general case the stable model semantics is Π11-hard. In this paper we prove that a larger class of programs, called finitely recursive programs, preserves most of the good properties...

Confidentiality-Preserving Publishing of EDPs for Credulous and Skeptical Users

Publishing private data on external servers incurs the problem of how to avoid unwanted disclosure of confidential data. We study the problem of confidentiality-preservation when publishing extended disjunctive logic programs and show how it can be solved by extended abduction. In particular, we analyze how the differences between users who employ either credulous or skeptical non-monotonic rea...

Computing Intersection of Autoepistemic Expansions

In this paper, we consider the question of skeptical reasoning for an important nonmonotonic reasoning system — the autoepistemic logic of Moore. Autoepistemic logic is a method of reasoning which assigns to a set of formulas the collection of theories called stable expansions. A naive method to perform skeptical autoepistemic reasoning — deciding whether a given formula φ belongs to all expans...

The Alternating Semantics for Default Theories and Logic Programs

In this paper we propose a semantics for default theories, based on van Gelder's alternating xpoint theory. The distinct feature of this semantics is its preservation of Reiter's semantics when a default theory is not considered \problematic" under Reiter's semantics. Diierences arise only when a default theory has no extensions, or has only \biased extensions" under Reiter's semantics. This fe...

A sequent calculus for skeptical reasoning in autopeistemic logic

A sequent calculus for skeptical consequence in infinite autoepistemic theories is presented and proved sound and complete. While skeptical consequence is decidable in the finite case, the move to infinite theories increases the complexity of skeptical reasoning to being Π1-complete. This implies the need for sequent rules with countably many premises, and such rules are employed.
